Cooking gas swindlers in the Dominican Republic don't get jailed.
DominicanToday.com - Despite that the National Consumer Rights Protection Institute (Pro-Consumidor) announced that nearly half of all propane gas stations rip off users, the agency’s director Altagracia Paulino yesterday said “we aren’t looking to get anyone in jail.”

She said she expects future inspections to “resolve the problem” and reach a transparent market,” since the fraud “has affected the most needy.”

“For us is regretful that among the people who steal gas are the beneficiaries, mostly poor single mothers, of Bonogas,” the official said in reference to the government subsidy for the fuel.

“To steal three gallons of the 10 they pay for is preposterous. That is inadmissible,” said Paulino, but revealed that Pro-Consumidor proceeds only against those stations where most of the complaints are received.

She added that the agency doesn’t have enough inspectors to handle the many complaints lodged a daily against the swindlers.
