The bishops of the Dominican Republic issued a statement at the close of their recent annual meeting lamenting the violence that is afflicting the Caribbean nation.
“We are deeply concerned and saddened to see an escalation of violence in our country,” the bishops noted in their July 9 statement. “How can we be indifferent to the shedding of blood, to so many violent attacks on the men and women for whom Christ shed his own blood? … We must each examine our behavior, personal and institutional, to see if we are truly people of peace or instead perpetrators of violence.”
