DominicanToday.com - The Custom Agency warned Wednesday it will be “implacable” against medicine smugglers and announced a widening investigation in the wake of the millions worth of contraband seized Monday in Santiago, to determine if the three suspects detained are part of a larger network
It said the vigilance has been heightened at border crossings, ports, airports and positions to halt the practice.
Customs said its Intelligence Department conducted a search which led to medicines, vehicles, cash and checks, seized in Santiago with the coordination of the Public Health Ministry.
The smuggled, bogus and relabeled medicine is sold and poses a threat to the population’s health and becomes unfair competition against those who normally market pharmaceuticals, Customs said, adding that its intelligence work led to the arrests of Darío Quezada Muñoz, Danilo Quezada Muñoz and Leoncio Rodriguez Mejía, for whom bail was set at RD$200,000 in their arraignment.
